Father-Focused Baby Showers

Celebrating and Empowering Dads

Introduction

When we think of infant care, mothers are often the focus of attention, but fathers play an equally vital role in ensuring the health and safety of their children. At D.A.D. (Dedicated, Active, and Devoted Dads), we emphasize the importance of engaging fathers in safe sleep practices to help reduce Indiana’s alarming infant mortality rate.

Understanding the Problem

Indiana’s infant mortality rate is 20-25% higher than the national average, with Black infants dying at three times the rate of White infants. One of the most preventable causes of these deaths is unsafe sleep practices, such as co-sleeping, improper bedding, or placing babies in unsafe sleeping positions. Fathers can be key agents of change by promoting safe sleep environments at home.

How Fathers Make a Difference

  1. Role Modeling Safe Practices: Fathers who actively implement safe sleep practices (e.g., using a crib or bassinet, ensuring babies sleep on their backs) set the standard for everyone in the household.

  2. Educating and Advocating: Fathers can spread awareness about safe sleep practices within their social circles, family, and communities.

  3. Providing Emotional and Practical Support: Fathers who are informed and involved help reduce stress on mothers, creating a collaborative parenting environment that benefits the entire family.

At D.A.D., we empower fathers through educational workshops, interactive events, and support resources to ensure they are well-prepared to advocate for safe sleep practices. Together, we can create healthier, safer environments for Indiana’s infants.
